   ROBOTS PLAY AN EVER-INCREASING role in our world. Many people tend to think of robots as walking, talking, human-like creations portrayed in science-fiction movies. However a robot is in fact a mute, automatic machine, with electronic brains programmed to carry out specific tasks. Most robots are used in industry. For example, nuclear scientists use robots to handle radio activity materials. In the 1980s, scientists also began to to recherch the use of robots in rotien medical surgery.

 The future

 How a robot works

   A typical industrial robot is one-armed machine with flexible joints equivalent to the human shoulder, elbow and wrist. It has agripping mechanism that works as a hand. The robotic arm swives on its supporting base, and may be moved electrically or pneumaticaly, by using compressed air. All movements are controlled by the robot's computer brain.
