Islands

DOTTED OVER THE OCEANS OF THE WORLD are millions of Islands. Some islands are no bigger than rocks, but others are vast land masses - Greenland, for example, covers 2.2 million square Kilometers (0.85 million square miles). An island is an area of land smaller than a continent that is surroundered with water. Islands may be created when the sea rises or the land sinks, drowning valleys to leave only the highest ground above sea level. Islands may also form when ocean-floor volcanoes, built up by the lava from successive erruptions, emerge above water.
